The History of Pico do Refúgio

Located on the stunning northern coast, in the heart of São Miguel Island in the Azores, Pico do Refúgio is a place rich in history, dating back to the early 17th century. For over more than three centuries, it has served multiple purposes: from a militia fort to a haven for artists, from an orange grove estate to a tea factory. It was also the country house of the painter and writer Luís Bernardo Leite de Ataíde and, later, the residence and place of inspiration for sculptor Luísa Constantina.

Today, this unique space is reborn as Pico do Refúgio – Country Houses, offering the opportunity to experience something truly special amidst lush nature, local history, art, and the tranquility of island life.

Here, every corner tells a story, and every stay is a journey through time, in perfect harmony with the present.
